Tim Jones awarded Life Membership of BCCG
Recognising exceptional leadership, advocacy and service to New Zealand's multi-unit community
The Body Corporate Communities Group is proud to award Life Membership to Tim Jones in recognition of his exceptional contribution to BCCG and the wider unit title sector.
Tim joined the BCCG Auckland Branch committee and National Executive in 2020 and went on to serve as National President. Over the following years he helped strengthen BCCG's national voice, deepen relationships with government and sector organisations, and build the credibility of BCCG as an advocate for owners, committees and multi-unit communities.
His contribution reaches well beyond his leadership of BCCG. Tim is one of New Zealand's most experienced property and unit title lawyers. In 2003 he co-authored a paper calling for review of the Unit Titles Act 1972 and later contributed through legal working groups to the reforms that led to the Unit Titles Act 2010 and its regulations.
That legal expertise has always been matched by a willingness to use it. Tim has represented body corporate interests with government, contributed to legislative and policy discussions, served on MBIE's Seismic Review Steering Group, and shared practical guidance with BCCG members and the wider sector on governance, meetings, legislation and emerging issues.
Tim's standing across the sector is reflected in the comments received from people who have worked closely with him over many years.
Lyn Gillingham, Immediate Past President, BCCG
“It was relief that I stepped down as National President in 2020 after Tim Jones joined our Executive and agreed to take on the role - here was a person with both enormous knowledge of and respect in the body corporate sector who could lead us into a new decade. Working with Tim over the last six years has taught me how much I still have to learn about bodies corporate and the legislation governing our communities. Tim willingly shares his knowledge and experience with any who seek it; he has championed BCCG at local and national government levels while continuing to work in the property law sector. Tim and the word ‘retirement’ do not belong together! He is not only a mentor but also a highly valued friend.”
Liza Fry-Irvine, unit title lawyer
“Having worked with Tim on the initial introduction of the UTA 2010 and for years following, to me Tim embodies the title ‘Godfather of Unit Titles’. The industry is so grateful for his selfless pursuit to improve Bodies Corporate across NZ via lobbying, law changes, education, and always sharing his wealth of knowledge. Receiving a BCCG Life Membership is more than befitting for Tim and is very much deserved.”
Anita Reinecke, BCCG National Executive and SCA (NZ)
“I have had the privilege of working closely with Tim for several years through both BCCG and SCA (NZ), including our regular advocacy meetings with MBIE and a number of important industry projects. Tim is deeply passionate about advocacy and gives his time and expertise incredibly generously; SCA (NZ), in particular, has benefited enormously from his practical and legal guidance in developing many of our best-practice guides. He is highly regarded throughout the industry, and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work alongside him.”
Life Membership recognises not only Tim's years of service, but the lasting influence of that service. His knowledge, integrity, advocacy and willingness to help others have made a genuine difference to BCCG and to the wider sector.
Tim remains an important part of the BCCG community and continues to provide experience and advice as he is able.
On behalf of BCCG members across Aotearoa New Zealand, we congratulate Tim on this well-deserved recognition and thank him for the enormous contribution he has made to better multi-unit living.
