Apartment reform legislation launched
The Hon Judith Collins and Hon Nikki Kaye have recently provided a draft Bill to Housing Minister Phil Twyford seeking Government support in their adoption of a Bill to reform the Unit Titles Act.
The release of the Bill has been reported by Anne Gibson, Property Editor of NZ Herald.
The Body Corporate Chairs Group has been supportive of the need for change to the existing legislation and what is proposed today is a very important step in this process.
Support had been provided by a number of BCCG members and by BCCG itself into the establishment of the review process and we were pleased to participate in the Working Group submission to then Minister Hon Nick Smith in May 2016.
In December 2016 MBIE provided their discussion document outlining proposed changes and BCCG continued participation through the Working Group and also made a detailed submission in February 2017.
As the major body corporate owners' organisation in New Zealand, we are frequently contacted by members who struggle with outcomes created through some of the loopholes in governance matters that are possible under the present legislative structure.
BCCG is therefore pleased to have supported the process that Hon Nikki Kaye has progressed with ongoing support from the Working Group, and will participate in supporting the draft Bill to the Government and through its next stages.
For all of our members greater certainty is required to enable the huge growth in multi-owned developments to proceed smoothly. Failure to close the emerging loopholes will see future generations reluctant to adopt this important lifestyle residential choice.
